This is an original story written,
illustrated, and published by myself.
In 1988, I came up with this story to
help my children learn to tie their
shoes. Each part of the adventure is
related to a step in the shoe tying
process. Several years after the initial
telling of Hippity and Hop's fun game of
hide and seek, I decided to get this
story officially copyrighted. So in
mid-2007, I completed and filed the
copyright application. I am very proud
to say that copyright number
TXu001574730 has been assigned to
my book by the US Copyright Office.
I had several offers from publishing
companies to get my book published.
These publishing companies wanted to
change the illustrations by hiring their
own illustrators to do the images. I
declined all offers because I feel that
my illustrations, which are copyrighted
with the story, are as important to MY
story as are the words. So with my
talents as an artist, my sewing skills,
and my determination, I set out to
publish the book on my own. Since this
story primarily is geared toward
children aged 2-5, I decided to make
the book a fabric book.  The
illustrations are first drawn lightly onto
fabric with pencil. I then use my sewing
machine, on satin stitch, to trace over
the lines. The rabbits are actually
made from faux fur to give them the
texture of real rabbits.  The fur is
adhered to the fabric. Satin stitches
around the edges and for the features
finish up the rabbits. The words are
then written onto each page by hand
using fabric markers.  Each page is
then sewn to another and put in the
correct order to complete the book.
This process takes approximately one
week. I feel that every child who hears
this story, will love it and remember
how to tie their shoes.  Just my
retelling of this story over the years
has helped about two dozen children
learn to tie their shoes. The book also
has strings attached to the front and
back cover for additional tying practice.
